When To Renew

Your driver's license card expires every 5 years. You can renew up to 1 year before it expires. Don't wait until it's expired — you can be fined for driving with an expired license.

How To Renew

Book online (if available in your area)

Some provinces offer online booking at online.natis.gov.za. Otherwise visit your nearest Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC) early in the morning.

Bring your documents

Original ID, current driver's license card, and proof of address (not older than 3 months).

Eye test and photo

Complete the eye test and have your photo and fingerprints taken at the centre.

Pay the renewal fee

Pay ±R250 (cash or card depending on centre).

Receive temporary license

You'll get a temporary paper license valid while your new card is produced.

Collect your new card

Cards take 4–12 weeks. You'll receive an SMS when it's ready. Collect at the same centre.

⚠️ Tip: Go as early as possible. DLTC centres get very busy. Some centres open at 7am — arrive before opening for shorter queues.
