What Is An RDP House?

An RDP (Reconstruction and Development Programme) house is a free government-built house for South Africans who cannot afford their own home. The government provides these through the National Housing Subsidy Programme.

Who Qualifies?

How To Apply

1

Visit your local municipal housing office

Go to your nearest municipal office or ward councillor's office. They handle housing applications in your area.

2

Fill in the housing application form

Complete the official housing subsidy application form. An official will help you fill it in.

3

Submit required documents

Hand in certified copies of your ID, proof of income, marriage certificate (if married), and birth certificates of dependants.

4

Get placed on the waiting list

Your application goes onto the national housing database. You receive a reference number.

⚠️ Reality check: Waiting times can be very long — sometimes 5–15 years depending on your area and the housing backlog. Apply as soon as you qualify.
